Oak Haven Massage is a family owned and operated therapeutic massage center serving clients throughout Central Texas since 2005. Founded by Dr. Steven Shuel, our practice brings a medical approach to bodywork that distinguishes us from conventional massage therapists.
Our Story: From Retirement to 2 Million Sessions
In April of 2005, Dr. Steven Shuel sold his chiropractic practice in Santa Paula, California, where he had treated patients since 1988. He relocated to San Antonio with his wife Kathleen and their four daughters, intending to take a few years off before determining what the next chapter of his life would hold. The plan lasted precisely five days. A single massage session sparked an idea that would end his retirement and establish one of the most successful therapeutic massage practices in the region.
Dr. Shuel observed that most massage centers offered relaxing, spa-style sessions, yet few provided the therapeutic, medical-grade bodywork that he and his staff had delivered in California. He believed there was a substantial market for clients seeking genuine muscular rehabilitation rather than simple relaxation. After several weeks of consideration and extensive discussions with Kathleen, he made the decision in May 2005 to open a new business.
The Growth of Oak Haven Massage
Oak Haven Massage opened its doors in November of 2005 in San Antonio. What began as a single location with a handful of therapists has grown into a multi-location practice spanning the Austin and San Antonio metropolitan areas. As of July 2025, the practice completed 2 million massage sessions, a milestone that reflects the sustained trust our clients place in our therapists.
A Team Built on Excellence
The practice currently employs 250 individuals, including 200 full-time licensed massage therapists. Each therapist receives training in our therapeutic methodology, ensuring that every session meets the clinical standards Dr. Shuel established nearly two decades ago. Our commitment to employing full-time therapists rather than independent contractors allows us to maintain consistency in technique and client care across all locations.
